WHY I THINK EQUITY IS A FAR FETCHED IDEOLOGY.

Only recently i came across a certain post, of which spoke extensively on the importance of equity as a political tool for a societal game changer. And i was opportune to engage in a philosophical discussion with the author, given this concept in particular amongst others in the post, are of very complex philosophical ideas.

To begin with, what is equity?

The term equity as a political ideology, is used to represent fairness, justice, and impartiality in the distribution of resources, and opportunities.

This ideology if properly implemented, stands a chance to bring about lasting societal progress. However, such an ideology is likely to only succeed on paper, than in real life. This is due to one major reason; equity as an ideology is more of subjectivity, than objectivity, which in itself is a flaw. Well, that doesn’t mean equity as a concept is of no good. It is simply a political tool that runs on the will of the enforcer, with no objectivity. This comes with a lot of loopholes that could be exploited. Moreover political power is transient, leaving the people at the mercy of whoever the enforcer is.

Nevertheless, i am of the belief that good men should rule, and not the other way around. According to Plato “the price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.” He is of the belief that the society should be governed by the philosopher king. One who is based on ethical core values and philosophical principles. A true leader is one who live by ethical principles and values. A good leader is not a tyrant who is motivated by selfish interests.

WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD?

How can we ensure lasting fairness, justice, impartiality in the society? This is where politics fall short. The concept of politics is to govern how humans interacts with each other, however, it has very little relevance to the most important factor, which is the individual. You know what might work? Empathy. A good leader need only create safe and human enabling environment for his people to thrive, the rest is for the people to do in a free society. Also, i do not undermine the importance of policies to prevent individuals who would want to exploit loopholes in the system.

Equity is a political ideology on an attempt to create a society where fairness, justice, impartiality thrive. When properly applied it would have only succeeded in treating symptoms. It might also lead to the same crisis it is intended to fix. Politics can go so far, but it does not solve the human nature. This is where empathy, critical reasoning, mutual respect, core family values and support, comes into play, because as a matter of fact, the human nature is not a problem to be solved, but something to be understood.

In conclusion, while ensuring fairness, creating opportunities, etc, to create a lasting solution, we should look at the root cause, which are things that cannot be solved politically, rather than trying to rigidly implement the concept of equity. This validate the need to foster an ethical based society, on empathy, with mutual respect, and core family values, since the family is at the foundation of the society.

  1. Plato’s approach to government in, The Republic, was idealistic, which is good to know.

Fast forward to the Niccolo Machiavelli of the Renaissance, whose approach to government was practical. Which is to say, politics is all about the acquisition of power and the keeping of it.

How to meld the ideal with the practical?

Only a virtuous, well-educated people are able meld the ideal with the practical to form a just republic where the human being can flourish.

Practically, equal justice before the law, not the nebulous, subjective, Marxist term, equity, must rule in the just republic.

  2. My suspicion is that our only hope over the very long term is to change human nature. Breed out the seven deadly sins. Politics is for the aggressors. So is capitalism and business in general. Equality can only work if most of us want it. Only by changing human nature does that have any chance of happening

    • I don’t think the human nature is a problem to be fixed, rather it is something to be understood. This is why ethical and philosophical core values are important. I do not believe in the give up theory. According to Plato “the price good men pay for their indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.” I am of the belief that good men should rule, and not the other way around. According to Plato he calls him “the philosopher king”

      • Unfortunately bad men are driven into politics by their desire for power, domination and material goods. Good men on the whole want peace and quiet and do not desire the endless conflict of politics. Good men never have and never will rule. In my opinion.

      • It is true that most individuals go into politics for the acquisition of power out of selfish desires. But it is also true that evil rule because good men let it.
Why do you think all through history till this day, governments invests a lot on controlled informations? Because in the end, the masses are the power they wield. When you control informations, you control the mind of the people. Politics is psychological.
The truth is evil will always be a part of human nature, and existence. Out of the masses rulers emerge. They are one of us. In every one there exist both good and evil, this is why discipline, ethical values is important. I spoke about this on some of my previous articles, if you will care to look at them. Why it appears as though evil prevail is because the good men let it.

  4. I agree the concept of politics is a far cry from what is really happening. I also agree that there is a huge lack in empathy. They say that light can not exist without darkness as in good cannot exist without evil, which is a little sad honestly because there is so much darkness, but in theory the beautiful part of this means that there is much goodness and light in the world as well. Great post. Have a blessed day Damon.

    • Thank you for your insightful comment. In everyone exists both good and evil. This is why we need a culture where ethics, philosophical values, critical thinking is prioritized, as opposed to greed, lust, ignorance.
Politics can go so far, but it doesn’t fix the human nature, because it isn’t a problem to be fix, but something to be understood. I believe good men should be in power. Leadership should be backed by philosophical and ethical core values, rather than one based on greed and interests. In the end, the price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men. I guess that’s why it appears as though evil overshadows the world, because the good men let it.

      • Indeed Damon.. could not have said it better myself. We have a lack of understanding of true human nature in theory it kinda means we have a lack of understanding of ourselves as humans. It can be naive of me, but I think that there is a rise in consciousness happening and my hope is that maybe the good men might be able to see how truly needed they are in this world. • Thanks you.
Indeed there is a rise in consciousness globally. More and more individuals are becoming self aware. This is a good thing. I believe ignorance is amongst the greatest evil of all if not the greatest. And it appears the world of today thrives on ignorance. This must change.

  5. In my view, a better society can only come about piecemeal, if at all. The earth has been inhabited by predator and prey since the very beginning and only a thorough search of the collective consciousness and a growing desire to implement real change will ever make any difference.
