Stay Lit: Living for Christ in a Dark World

Life can feel like a maze. Pressure from friends, social media, expectations, and mistakes can make you feel lost. But Jesus calls young people to shine, not by being perfect, but by being connected to Him.

Today I will be discussing how to stay lit for Christ, even when the world around you feels dark.

Key Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world…”

Imagine you’re holding a phone with 3% battery. No charger. No power bank. No light. You know that panic feeling right before the phone dies. That’s what happens to many young Christians today:

We want to shine, but we don’t stay connected to the source. And without connection to God, pressure, temptation, and confusion drain us fast.

You Carry Light, Not Because You’re Perfect, But Because Christ Lives in You

  • God isn’t waiting for you to “get it together” before He uses you.
  • Light shines naturally; it doesn’t need to force itself.

In 2 Corinthians 4:6, it says; “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

This simply means God puts His light in ordinary individuals like you and I.

Darkness Doesn’t Need Permission to Enter; It Enters When Light Leaves

When you stop praying, stop reading the Word, stop keeping godly friendships, darkness sneaks in silently.

Just like your room gets dark for example, the moment you switch off the bulb.

In Psalm 119:105, it says; “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

A Bright Life Requires a Strong Connection

If your spiritual life keeps flickering:

  • Check your fellowship
  • Check your habits
  • Check your influences
  • Check your entertainment
  • Check your friends

According to John 15:5; “Without Me, you can do nothing.” Christ is needed to build a strong spiritual foundation.

Light Isn’t Loud; It’s Consistent

You don’t have to shout scripture to be a Christian. Just live your life in a way that reflects Christ:

  • Kindness
  • Integrity
  • Honesty
  • Self-control
  • Compassion

People notice consistent character more than Christian slogans.

PRACTICAL WAYS FOR YOUTH TO “STAY LIT”

  1. Daily Prayer: Even if it’s 5 minutes.
  2. Stay in the Word: One chapter a day.
  3. Choose Friends Wisely: Energy is transferable.
  4. Limit What You Watch: Not everything trending is feeding you.
  5. Join a Faith Community: Fellowship strengthens you.
  6. Serve God with Your Gifts: Anything can be used for God; singing, editing, dancing, tech, media, encouragement.

A candle doesn’t fear darkness. A torchlight doesn’t negotiate with night. Darkness only wins when light refuses to shine. You may not feel strong, but you carry the light of Christ. You don’t have to be loud; just shine.
