The Plaque of Assumption Stems from Individual Perceptions

This topic might not seem like much, however, the very essence of this discussion is most likely present in the subconscious of every reader of this write up. It is a thought pattern.

Have you ever made conclusions about situations or events without knowing the full facts? That is called assumption. Assumptions are judgments or beliefs one make without verifying the facts.

While they may seem harmless, assumptions can have powerful effects on how one view the world and interact with others. This is why assumption is a plague, because it spreads quickly, shaping relationships, decisions, and even societal norms in ways that are not always positive.

Where do assumptions stem from?

Assumptions arise from one’s personal perceptions, which are shaped by experiences, culture, emotions, and biases. However, appearances often differs from reality. For instance:

  • if someone is late to a meeting, one might assume they are lazy or irresponsible. However, the truth could be a traffic jam or an unexpected emergency.
  • People assume they know someone, and make strong conclusions about situations or events just from 5mins screen time, which are most likely positioned in such a way to create a click bait, hilarious.

Our brain uses assumptions as shortcuts to make sense of situations quickly. While this can be helpful in some cases, relying too much on assumptions can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts.

What are the impact of assumptions?

  • In Personal Relationships: Assumptions often create unnecessary tension. For example, one might assume a friend is upset with them because they haven’t called, when in reality, they could be busy or dealing with their own challenges.
  • In Professional Settings: At work, assumptions can lead to miscommunication and errors. If a team member doesn’t respond promptly, one might assume they’re uncooperative, which could hinder collaboration.
  • In Society: Stereotypes and biases often stem from assumptions about certain groups of people. These generalized beliefs can lead to prejudice and discrimination.

How does one break the cycle of assumption?

To reduce the negative effects of assumptions, one can take these steps:

  • Ask Questions: Instead of jumping to conclusions, seek clarification.
  • Practice Empathy: Try to understand the situation from the other person’s perspective.
  • Be Mindful of Biases: One should reflect on how their experiences shape their perceptions and challenge any unfair judgments.
  • Communicate Openly: Honest conversations can help clear up misunderstandings caused by assumptions.

What am i saying in essence?

The plague of assumption stems from how we perceive the world. However, it can be managed by being more thoughtful and aware. By questioning our assumptions and seeking to understand others, we can improve our relationships, make better decisions, and foster a more inclusive society.

Do not forget, assumptions are like guesses, they’re not always accurate. Taking the time to uncover the truth can lead to better outcomes for everyone.

  1. Excellent post, Victor! I’m guilty of making all kinds of assumptions which, as your rightly say, are not always accurate. On the other hand, when navigating some public spaces, my safety as a woman depends upon making accurate assumptions about the individuals around me.

    • I get what you mean Rosaliene. One can never be too careful. Sometimes danger comes from those you least expect, I guess that’s why it isn’t safe to use accurate and assumptions in the same sentence as a thought pattern. At the end of the day, only God can keep one safe.
