The Individual And The Society

What’s something most people don’t understand?

Given we are beings living a finite life, in a world that existed long before us, and will keep existing long after us, we barely have enough time individually, to understand life in its wholeness. Hence, everything we know about life is either handed to us or shaped by the society and timeline we exist in.

However, one common misconception about the society is that it exists independent of the individual. The society in this context represents the human society. The society is an illusion, what is true are individuals. The society exists to serve the individual, while the individual serves the society. Anything short of this among the two will eventually lead to a disaster. Read more https://dcreativewriter.art.blog/2024/02/21/why-the-world-is-going-backwards-in-the-presence-of-abundant-knowledge/

There is no growth in the society outside the individual. I recently came across a quote by Oscar Wilde “Society exists only as a mental concept, in reality there are only individuals.” And I must say, to this quote in particular, I strongly affirm. The external world is not development in itself, but a means to an end, to guide and aid in developing the mind, which would in return develop the external world.

Until individuals come to an understanding of these truths, and abide by these rules, there shall be no real development nor growth in the society. Every progress or advancement will lie in trials and errors. To neglect the individual, is to regress, even if the external world appears to be developing, because in reality it is not.

  1. Love the Oscar Wilde quote, I have come to terms with this and fully agree with you. Which makes me wonder why we put so much emphasis on fitting into societies that don’t really exist and if they don’t really exist they don’t really matter. 🤌🏻🤷🏻‍♀️ Make that make sense for me. Fantastic post, beautifully written as always Victor🙏🏻❤️‍🔥

    • I love your insight on this jessi. However, as irrelevant as society may appear, it is still as relevant as our collective survival. Society preserves our history and civilization. Without the society, it is back to the state of nature for every individual. At least the society helps create the illusion of togetherness, and with that is a hope for a true togetherness.
However, any true development in the society, is only possible by first developing the mind, which has brought about the societal development in the first place. A better individual, will also mean a better society, a better society, will mean a better individual. They go hand in hand.

  2. Totally agree 💯. To neglect the individual is to regress. Which happens when most people conform to the societal ideals supported by a majority. Ideally, If everyone was able to first look into themselves and develop first then wholesomely it’d be a great contribution to the society at large.

  3. Victor, this post felt like you quietly turned the idea of “society” upside down—then shook out all the loose change.
You reminded us that society isn’t some giant machine—it’s just all of us, walking around with opinions, fears, dreams, and Wi-Fi.

We treat “society” like it’s a thing out there. Like a weather system we can’t control.
But really, it’s just people. Billions of small minds and big feelings, trying to live together without tripping over each other.

It’s like soup, Victor. Society is the flavor—but the people are the vegetables.
If we grow bitter, the whole thing turns sour. But if we grow wiser, everything starts tasting better.

You said it simply and powerfully—fix the inside first.
Thanks for the reminder that real change doesn’t start in the headlines. It starts in the mirror.
