What is hasty generalization?
This is a logical fallacy in which a conclusion is drawn from insufficient, or biased evidence. This occurs in the situation where an individual makes a broader claim, based on small sample, or the observation of a few. I wrote about this in one of my articles.
Only yesterday i was in argument with an individual. It was not a blissful conversation at all, because i was trying to prove a point, he was trying to impose his thoughts and beliefs. I guess i should have known that the conversations were going nowhere, because he kept switching topics till we lost track of our initial topic. It was full of so much biases, till he began to switch to unrelated conversations based on tribe and gender. Such arguments should be avoided at all cost, because it is not a matter of what/who is right or wrong, but a matter of who wins, and who loses.
This is the reality in Nigeria, and it is the same all over the world. The worst set of individuals, are ignorant proud individuals, who blindly follow their beliefs, leaving no room for wonder and new ideas. They are always on the lookout for informations, and situations that reinforces their biases, and blind to everything else that doesn’t.
This way of thinking has brought about so much hate and divisiveness in the society. Orientations like tribalism, racism, gender based hatred and biases, are all a product of such reasoning. This is not a new thing, as it has been a part of mankind since the beginning of consciousness. And from the look of things, I don’t think it will be ending anytime soon.

It was insane, to be honest i felt bad for him. But i was mostly disappointed in myself for not knowing better not to engage.

Standing up for yourself, your beliefs and basic truths is perfectly fine. Unfortunately, sometimes you just can’t make any headway with certain people as you were reminded yesterday. It can be hard to back down from a situation like that so I completely sympathize.

Now a days people don’t care or listen to what you are saying but rather listening for a pause so they can insert their two cents in. Nicely stated Damon.

Exactly. It’s always about winning rather than learning from the conversation.

This is not a trait specific to Nigeria. I think the whole world suffers from what I call the ‘know it all syndrome’. This is only reinforced by religious bias- and for Pete’s sake who can win an argument with someone who wholeheartedly believes they have god on their side. Very thought-provoking article.

It’s a pity most individuals have no knowledge of God, all they know are what they have been told. It’s a programing, and they are living a rehearsed life.

It’s a serious problem here, too, Victor. Even within my family.

A very big one. I don’t think we yet understand how much of a problem this really is.

We are forever students of life, Boo to biases lol I hope that maybe as more of us grow, heal and learn that eventually the biases will be a thing of the past. I Hope! Great post Damon

Do you know what made it funny? I too have met some terrible individuals in this life. But eventually i understood, that perhaps i should take part in the responsibility, and not allow such persons into my life ever again, rather than being bitter.

I understand…I fight with this as well. Because on one hand how can they not see or feel they are being terrible and then on the other hand I see that instead of arguing and trying to change their minds it is better to walk away, Yes bitterness gets the better of me some days as well but I have gotten better at shaking it off. Because if I allow them to make me bitter than they have won and I stay lost in the bitterness. Sorry you have to deal with such people and good job letting them go on their own way Damon

This. I think i might also write an article on this. Do you know why kids experience better relationships and connections than adults? Because they don’t care about such a thing has making a fool of themselves, which is also why they are vulnerable. For adults, it’s a power struggle, because no one wants to be vulnerable to the wrong person. This is why there is the saying, that “men are in love, while women are in business” because historically men are naturally stronger. And looking at the way the society is structured today, at least in the heart of everyone is to protect the vulnerable. Some individuals have learnt to take advantage of this, and it is beginning to backfire. All this has contributed to the breakdown of trust amongst individuals in the society, leading to tribal and gender based biases.
And do you know what is even more disturbing, if one takes a proper look at the situation, one will see that there are massive corporations profiting from all of the chaos, either directly or indirectly.

Yes🔥🙌🏻🙌🏻 you should write about it. I believe you because when we are kids we are pure and innocent. I miss that in people. I wish we could always hold onto that. Unfortunately your right people do take advantage of the vulnerable. That’s why the vulnerable guard their hearts. As far as the corporations profiting from the chaos this enrages me. All the corruption and biases is nonsense in my humble opinion. It leads nowhere except to fill their pockets😩🤮
