The Human Obsession With Escapism

For mankind, reality is unbearable. At the very apex of our being we know we are so much more, greater, sufficient. This is what many believe to be the human soul; that part of us that is self aware, void of thoughts and perceptions.

The soul is void of language, beliefs, rather it is just pure knowing. Let us take “water” for example. In the Igbo language it is called “mmiri”, while in the Yoruba language, it is called “omi”. It doesn’t matter what we call it, or what language we use, it wouldn’t change the essence of it being. This brings us to the “law of identity”; the identity of a being resides within its essence, rather than what it is called.

The truth is, the human soul experience so much, but can only express so little. We have languages, numbers, beliefs, as representations of the truth. Aliens from other planets, if any at all, might not necessarily have the same mathematical equations that we have, but they would definitely have the same truth, because languages and symbols are all just representations of the truth, and not the truth in itself.

One of the biggest problem we have in the world today, is that we cannot distinguish between fiction and reality. We have so blurred the line between the truth and fiction, that we no longer recognize the truth.

We have art, so we can express the ever burning fire we feel within our soul. The soul is limitless. Only our language is limited, hence the use of poetry, myth, fiction, as a means for expression.

  2. Bravo Damon! You are right reality can be hard and we really are so much more. ” the human soul experiences so much, but can only express so little.” Fully agree with you and the fact that you touched on how we try to find a way to express what is in our souls with art, poetry ,and fiction . Truly a great topic and you did a great job. Thanks for the suggestion to read this post.

    • I am glad you like it. Kids growing up tend to ask lots of questions because they see a lot they do not understand, which is good. They are curious and inquisitive. Sadly as we get older we assume we know it all, no room for development. This could lead to dogmatism, because everything we know is only a representation of the objective truth, and not the truth in itself. It is more like a survival mechanism.
This why it is important to practice discipline, and critical reasoning.
